Welcome
Greetings from the Well Fed Family! Spring is on the way and we are excited to begin another season here at the farm. 2011 was a good year for us and we can’t thank you enough for all your support. We look forward to continuing to grow good, healthy food for you this coming season and in years to come.
BROILERS
This season, we’ll be raising the same delicious broiler chickens that you enjoyed last year, but we’ve revised our production schedule a bit in an effort to use our time and resources more effectively. Instead of raising 10 batches processed weekly, we’ll be doing 4 larger batches at about 5 week intervals. For those of you who like to eat fresh chicken, there will still be the option of getting a bird from each batch. In general though, we are encouraging you to buy your birds in bulk and freeze them. When packaged properly, as all ours are upon purchase, these chickens freeze superbly for up to a year with no noticeable difference in texture, flavor or overall quality. For those of you who don’t have extra freezer space, we will have birds available to buy out of our freezers throughout the year — we request that you pre-order these birds, as well. However, due to health department regulations, these chickens must but processed at a WSDA certified facility. This is a service that costs us extra, so these birds will be priced slightly higher.
Our processing dates will be June 17, July 29, September 16, and October 14 (all Sundays). We’ll contact you to discuss your preferred pick-up date(s) upon receiving you order.
Our feed prices have increased this year so we must increase our price per pound slightly. 2012 prices for fresh birds processed here on the farm are $5.25/lb. Prices for frozen birds are $5.75/lb. This year, we will also require a deposit of $7.00 per bird to be submitted with your order form. Deposits will help allay some of the costs associated with chicks, feed and other preseason purchases. The remainder of the cost of your birds will not be due until pick up.
PIGS
There’s just nothing better that Well Fed eggs and bacon for breakfast in the morning! Last year, we tried our hand at raising pigs and discovered that we really like working with these animals. They are a ton of fun to have around the farm and produce excellent quality meat when given room to exercise, play and forage. This season, we’ll be raising a limited number of pigs. They will be pasture-raised, organically fed and always humanely cared for. Pigs are available for purchase by the half or whole and will be processed in mid-to-late October. Please see the order form for prices and other details.
Many of you may remember Steve, the little Pyrenees puppy who joined our family last year. Now weighing in at 130 pounds, he’s not so little any more but he sure has plenty of puppy left in him. We’re also happy to report the addition of Edie, a 2 1/2 year old Pyrenees we adopted earlier this winter. Though Steve’s excessive energy appears to annoy her a little bit, she seems quite happy here on our farm. Edie is a natural guardian and has been a great role model for Steve.
We’ll soon be welcoming another little critter to our farm. After a few unsuccessful attempts, our Jersey cow Irene is pregnant and due to calve in late August. Congrats, Irene!!
Thank you again for your past and continued support. We look forward to seeing you at the farm soon.
